Interpretation of the 2026 New Policy for the Joint Entrance Examination for Overseas Chinese Students
The Joint Entrance Examination for Overseas Chinese Students (officially the “National Joint Admissions Examination for Overseas Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Students”) is an independent college entrance examination established by China for students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and overseas Chinese communities.

Two Pathways for Application Eligibility

According to the 2026 Admissions Guideho, the core eligibility requirements are: Chinese nationality + overseas permanent residence or 5 year legal residence + sufficient length of stay for both the candidate and one parent + a high school diploma.
Pathway A
The candidate and one of their parents must both have obtained long term or permanent residency in the country of residence, and must have resided there continuously for 2 years, with an aggregate stay of no less than 18 months within those 2 years. In particular, the candidate must have actually resided in that country for at least 18 months in total during the 2 years prior to registration.
Pathway B
If the candidate or one of their parents has not obtained long term or permanent residency, but has obtained legal residence status for at least 5 consecutive years (including 5 years) in the country of residence, with an aggregate stay of no less than 30 months within that 5 year period, and the candidate themselves has actually resided in that country for at least 30 months in total during the 5 years prior to registration, they are also eligible to apply.

2026 Latest Data:
First Decline in Four Years, Unleashing New Opportunities

On June 21, the Guangdong Provincial Education Examination Authority officially released the 2026 admission minimum admission scores for the national joint recruitment of overseas Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan students. The standards have been approved by the Ministry of Education. The full score lines for each tier are as follows:
Regular Undergraduate Batch
Base cut off: Humanities 430, Science/Engineering 445. “Double First Class” Double First-Class universities set separate higher thresholds: Humanities 515, Science/Engineering 535.
Arts Undergraduate Batch
Humanities 330, Science/Engineering 345
Sports Undergraduate Batch
Humanities 330, Science/Engineering 345
Preparatory Batch
Regular preparatory programs: Humanities 410, Science/Engineering 425. Jinan University preparatory program has separate thresholds: Humanities 495, Science/Engineering 515.
This is the first time the score lines have dropped after four consecutive years of increases since 2023. Compared with 2025 data: the regular undergraduate cut off for Science/Engineering dropped from 460 to 445 ( 15 points); the high score line for key Science/Engineering universities fell from 560 to 535 ( 25 points); the Humanities base line remained at 430, unchanged from last year.

Enrollment quotas have also expanded. In 2026, the total national joint recruitment plan increased by 158 places compared with the previous year, with a notable expansion in regular undergraduate programs – a total of 219 additional admission places (86 for liberal arts, 133 for science). The combination of lower score thresholds and larger enrollment clearly demonstrates sustained policy support for the higher education pathways of overseas Chinese students.
